The American Scapegoat

GRIEVANCE CULTURE | Anti-americanism serves the psychological need to blame failure and frustration on a potent, common enemy. But this is not to say that embittered anti-Americans are all wrong. They may be correct in certain particulars of their indictment, while succumbing to an overall conclusion which is merely a self-serving and irrational aversion.

Old-World Resentment

SPENGLER'S DERISION | Traditionally it was the right rather than the left that represented anti-Americanism. Conservative Europeans between the wars regarded the USA as soulless, commercialised and conformist.

The West by the Rest

THE OCCIDENTAL COMPLEX | Occidentalism, like Orientalism, is a stereotyped and dehumanised image of a vast array of different peoples. But such a notion of the West has the power to mobilise real revolutionary energies.

Hating America

THE LAST IDEOLOGY | While the crimes of other nations are ignored or forgiven, the US is demonised for lesser misdeeds-or even ones it has not committed. This has become an accepted discourse, not merely on the left but also among moderate commentators. Lacking any systematic measure of judgement, an irrational anti-Americanism has become their default dogma.
